Handwriting
Handwriting begins in the Early Years through daily Read Write Inc. (RWI) sessions, where children learn correct letter formation using consistent routines, rhymes and fine‑motor activities. This approach gives children strong foundations for future writing.
We continue to follow the Read Write Inc. programme to support handwriting development, using the letter‑join videos from Year 1 onwards. These model correct formation and joins clearly and support children to write accurately, correctly and at increasing speed, while also giving class teachers valuable opportunities to observe children’s handwriting in action and provide immediate feedback.
As children move into Key Stage 1, they learn to place letters correctly on the line, use the correct relative size for ascenders and descenders, form capital letters and numbers accurately, and develop greater control over spacing and consistency.

From Year 3 onwards, children are taught to join their handwriting progressively, aiming for fluent, legible writing across all subjects by the end of Key Stage 2. We monitor progress closely and provide additional support where needed, including small‑group teaching, fine‑motor strengthening activities and personalised guidance. Our aim is for every child to write comfortably, confidently and with pride.
